And a postscript RE: Uber

We have reported in recent newsletters regarding the legal case brought against Uber (and other companies) regarding the status of its workers. By way of reminder the boom in the so called 'gig economy' means that firms are increasingly trying to categorise their workers as self-employed meaning that the company does not have to make payments for holiday pay, sick pay etc. However, the courts are pushing back against this and are willing to describe people as 'employees' or 'workers' to increase the employment protection enjoyed by people working for such organisations.

The taxi firm Uber is a classic example of an organisation which has become very successful very quickly due in large part to reliance on technology and aggressive management techniques.

An interesting development in the Uber saga is the fact that it has been reported that the Chief Executive will taking a leave of absence from the company. A report has recently been produced following and independent investigation of Uber's management practices. Many readers may be surprised to learn that such a successful organisation lacks many basic policies and procedures covering such issues as diversity and inclusion guidance on alcohol and drugs. The report made specific reference to the human resources department and observed that many of Uber's managers are young and leading teams for the first time and had taken such roles without proper training.

This report and the subsequent side step of the Chief Executive is a salutary tale for Uber. However, on a wider level, it is an important reminder for all organisations that basic HR policies and procedures should be regularly reviewed and updated.
